History of Auraiya

Auraiya is a historic city as it was ruled by many rulers at different time period. Before 1997 the city was under Etawah district. Till 1762 the land was ruled by Marathas and it was during this time period Rohillas started invading various part of Uttar Pradesh. In 1792 a Rohilla force for sent to Etawah to invade under the leadership of Mullah Mohsin Khan. The Rohilla force won the war against the Marathas and they established their power and made Inayat Khan the ruler of the land.

Even though Rohillas won the war against Marathas the Zamindars in Etawah region refused to pay tax to the Rohillas and they opposed Rohillas which create many tensions between the two parties. So to sort out the issue Rohillas Chief Hafiz Rahmat Khan and his son Inayat Khan came to Etawah to meet the zamindars. The meeting was successful and the zamindars agreed to pay annually.  In 1762 Afghans who settled in Uttar Pradesh begin their war against the Rohillas to invade Etawah but was unsuccessful.

In 1766 the Marathas who were waiting for their opportunity to attack Rohillas and to restore their power attacked Rohillas under the leadership of Mulhar Rao in Phaphund but the battle ended without any result. The Marathas then formed an alliance in Delhi with Nijab-ud-daula who was also not very happy about Rohillas. Maratha army along with Zabita Khan representing Nijab-ud-daula started marching towards Etawah to war against Rohillas. Zabita Khan has no intention to fight against his own race of Afghans. The Maratha who came to know about Zabita Khan intension kept him as a prisoner to negotiate with Rohillas. During the negotiation with Rohillas chief Hafiz Rahmat Khan the Marathas asked for the jagris of Shikohabad and Etawah which was denied by Hafiz Rahmat Khan. But during their negotiations Zabita Khan successfully escaped from the Mathara army.

In 1771 Hafiz Rahmat Khan decided to hand over Auraiya i.e. Etawah district to the Marathas itself to avoid war tension. In 1774 Oudh government was setup in Etawah who invaded the land using their alliance with the British East India Company.
